Margaret "June" Smith, age 93 of Albia, went to be with her Heavenly Father on April 16, 2015 at the Monroe Care Center in Albia.

June was born April 14, 1922 to John and Margaret (Davison) Gay in Rizerville, Iowa. She attended Albia High School. June married Charles "Pete" Smith on Sunday, April 14, 1940 at the Monroe County Courthouse. To this union 4 children were born, Faith, Hope, Pamela Rae, and Diane. Together, June and Pete shared 39 years of marriage together until his passing in March of 1980.

After high school June and Pete moved to Gary, Indiana where she was a welder for Youngstown Welding until 1948 when they moved back to Avery, Iowa. Her church was like 2nd home. She joined the Avery United Methodist Church and was baptized in 1955. She worked with the MYF. Her car was always full of kids, taking them skating at Moravia and Ottumwa. She taught Sunday school and was superintendent for many years. She was also a Girl Scout Leader and helped with 4-H. June was President of the PTO and performed in the minstrel one year at the Avery school. She worked at the Box Factory, Maloney's, Behnke, Monroe Plastics, and Maytag She retired as a custodian from Grant School. She loved being around the kids. She belonged to and worked hard for the Hospital Auxiliary where she helped in the gift shop. She volunteered at the Extension Service. June was a member of the Garden Club, Women's Club, RSVP, WSCS, and SHARE Program. She sang with Sweet Adalines and went to London to perform. June belonged to Pleasant Corners Ladies Aide. She had a large garden and enjoyed canning. Her real passion later in life was her Dalhias. She loved making fudge for friends and family.

June is survived by her 3 daughters, Diane (Phil) Whitson of Albia, Hope (Don) Brouk of Clive, and Faith (Darrell) Carter of Avery; 7 grandchildren, Cheri (Jim) Kasella, Chris Whitson, Amy (Scott) Kutchen, Jay (Christine) Polson, Jill (Simon La Flamme) Polson, Clint (Brooke) Carter, Scott (Nickie) Carter; 11 great grandchildren, Charlie and Olivia Kasella, Pete Kutchen, June and John Polson, Logan, Caelynn, Raegan, Tucker, Kylie, and Hayden, Carter; sisters, Gloria (Joe) Steinback and Kathyrn Kwiatkowski; brother-in-law, Floyd Caster and also many nieces, nephews. She touched many hearts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Margaret; her husband Pete, daughter in infancy, Pamela Rae, a brother in infancy Donnie, her brother John; and a sister Adrina.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastor Sheri Arnold officiating. Burial will follow services at Oak View Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2015 at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with June's family present from 5:00-8:00 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Avery United Methodist Church or an open memorial has been established to June's family.
