Herbert William Sauter, age 104 of Albia, passed away Monday, February, 22, 2016 at his home in Albia.
Herbert was born February 14, 1912 to Robert and Rosie Sauter in Fonda Iowa. He married Yvonne Peters on October 24th, 1936 at St Mary's Church in Oskaloosa Iowa. They were blessed with three children, David, John, and Mary.
Herbert graduated from Fonda High School, class of 1930. He started working at the bank in Fonda. After he married, he worked at Iowa Trust and Savings in Oskaloosa. He later became president until he retired in 1980.
Herbert was a member of St Mary's Catholic Church of Oskaloosa Iowa, and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards with family and friends, and family croquet tournaments. When he moved to Oskaloosa he was in the Civilian Conservation Core where he was involved in the construction of the Oskaloosa Park and golf course. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Lions Club and Kiwana's. He was on the board of the Oskaloosa YMCA and was involved in the finances of the new YMCA.
In 1996 he moved to Albia to live with his daughter Mary, who provided him with loving care until he passed away. He became a member of the Albia Catholic Church. He enjoyed listening to all sports, high school, college, and professional. He also loved hearing about the achievements of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Herbert is survived by his three children, David (Charlene) Sauter of Pine Arizona, John (Jennifer) Sauter of Rockbridge, Ohio, and Mary Sauter of Albia; three grandchildren Charley (Sue) Sauter of Mesa, Arizona, Chris (Michelle) Sauter of Phoenix, Arizona, and Laura (Todd) Carriker of Oskaloosa, Iowa. He also has seven great grandchildren; Katie (Brandon) Kain, Grant and Adam Carriker, (children of Laura and Todd Carriker); Lauren and Julia Sauter (children of Charley and Sue Sauter) and Ashley and Tyler Sauter (children of Chris and Michelle Sauter); and special caregivers, MaryAnn Freshwater, Amanda Riddick, Deb Wilson, and Dana Fisher.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Yvonne Sauter, four brothers, Laurence, Earl, Walter, and Jerome, and two sisters, Irene and Margorie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 27, 2016 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia, with Father Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. officiating. Burial will follow services at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2016 at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Herbert's family present throughout. A rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. led by the Knights of Columbus Council 4167.
A memorial has been established to Hospice of Mahaska County and Pay It Forward Christmas Charity.
