Stained Glass Emblem

Gloria Maxine (Barnhill) Mick of Albia, quietly passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2015, at the age of 85, at the Monroe Care Center in Albia.

Gloria was born April 27, 1930, in Purdy, Iowa, to Samuel and Maude (Tulk) Barnhill. She started working in high school in 1945 as a waitress and cook's helper at the Bussey Café. Gloria always said "Gibby McConnell taught me how to work." Gloria was proud to be crowned "Bussey 4th of July Queen" in 1946. On September 23, 1950, she married Harold Lee Mick at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Harold and Gloria moved to Cherry Point, North Carolina while Harold served in the U.S. Marines. While there, they built and operated a Dairy King. Their son Doyle was born in November of 1952 and soon after Harold's discharge from the Marines, they all headed back to "good ole Iowa" with a new son and ice cream machine in tow. In 1955, with a 3 week old son, Dave, added to the team, Harold and Gloria built and operated Mick's Drive In in Albia. Harold as cook and Gloria running food to customers. Gloria also helped build and operated "Gloria's Wash All." In 1960, Gloria helped establish Mick's Furniture and Appliance. She worked at the store for many years with Harold and sons, Doyle and Dave.

Gloria was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Rebekah's Lodge, Albia Woman's Club, Hospital Auxiliary, past member of the Ragtime Industries Board, and active in Restoration Days. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother for several years and a member of the PTA. The community and education were important to Harold and Gloria. They were both supporters of the Albia Community Schools. Both helped encourage Albia graduates with the Harold and Gloria Mick scholarships. This tradition will continue. In spite of her busy work schedule and community interest, she was a "#1 MOM." Gloria's passion and interests were helping others and giving back. She valued her friendships she made and was thankful she could help others.

Gloria is survived by her children; Doyle (Tina) Mick and Dave (Lois) Mick; her grandchildren, Jenni (Eric) Bishop, Sara (Jimmie) Summers, Adam (Jill) Mick, Lindsey (Jeff) VanZee, Neal (Molly) Mick, Curt (Kristin Wilson fiancé) Mick, Nate (Kerri) Fosenburg and Kara (Matt) Case; her great-grandchildren, Rebecca (Klint) Sinclair, Jesse Bishop, Austin Summers, Jacob Bishop, Elijah Bishop, Hank Fosenburg, Caden Case, Mia Case, Katie Fosenburg, Fletcher Mick, Brynlee Mick, Annemarie Mick, Bowen Van Zee, Haley Van Zee, and Taylor Van Zee; and a great-great grandchild, Paisley Sinclair. She is also survived by 3 sisters, Sabra Lanphier, Barbara King, and Carol Barnhill; and 2 sisters-in-law, Eleanor Barnhill and Patty Barnhill.

"Other things may change us, but we start and end with family."

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; brothers Dale, Rex, and Charles; sisters, Rosa, Dorothy, and Mable; and "daughter" Adriana Loaiza, foreign exchange student.

Gloria was proud of Albia. She tried to help many people and tried to do it well. Gloria loved Albia and all her dear family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia, with Pastor Neil Montz officiating. Burial will follow services at Oak View Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Gloria's family present from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
