Dorothy Shelangoski, age 87 of Albia, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2015, under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice, at Oakwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Albia.

She was born May 1, 1928, to Vincent and Margaret (Rogal) Shelangoski in Jefferson County, Iowa. She graduated from Pleasant Plain Consolidated School, Class of 1947. After school, Dorothy worked at the Henrotin Hospital in medical records and later worked at the VA Hospital in Chicago for 34 years.

Dorothy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Albia. She enjoyed gardening, craft painting and spending time with her nieces and nephews. At different times Dorothy took all of them to Chicago with her. She also loved animals especially her cats and dogs.

Dorothy is survived by her sister, Laurine Townsend of Blakesburg, IA; nieces, Mary (Dale) Dohlman of Brighton, and Vicki (Michael) Crabtree of Yuma, AZ,; nephews, Vince (Meg) Townsend of Ottumwa, Steve Townsend of Blakesburg, Stan (Missy) Townsend of State Center, and Patrick Townsend of Albia; cousins Jim Winikates, Father Tom Winikates. Cathy Puckett, Caren Dense, Bob Ferencz and Ruth Kalstine. Dorothy is also survived by many other cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Margaret; a brother-in-law, Arthur Townsend a nephew, Michael Townsend; and a niece, Roberta Townsend.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia, with Father Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. Officiating. Burial will follow services at St. Mary's Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation will be held from 3 p.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Dorothy's family will be present from 4- 8:00 p.m. A 4:00 p.m. rosary will be led by St. Mary's Altar and Rosary society and a wake service will be held at 6:00 p.m.

A memorial has been established to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia or to the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Albia.
